At least 14 people are said to be dead after an Alshabaab attack in SOko Mbuzi village in Mandera County leaving several others injured. The attack is said to have taken place at around 1 AM.
The attackers are said to have planted grenades on the dopotrs but most people were sleeping outside in tents due to the hot weather. Mandera county commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo confirmed the attack.
The attackers then hurled a petrol bomb at the tents before shooting.
Most of the victims were quarry workers. The attackers are said to have escaped to nearby bushes when police on patrol arrived at the scene. Mr Nkoyo said police have launched a search for the attackers.
Job Boronjo, the Mandera County Police commander has stated that an improvised explosive device (IED) was found in one of the houses. Bomb experts are en route to detonate the device.
The Red Cross will be airlifting four injured to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
