Lingard was appalling against City

Jesse Lingard has conceded he was 'way off it' during his 45-minute performance against Manchester City.

The Manchester United midfielder made his first appearance in over a month on Saturday but was anonymous as City outclassed their hosts at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford consoled Lingard as he skulked off at half-time and the Wythenshawe lad replaced him on the left, as United manager Jose Mourinho switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

Lingard began the season with a superb solo goal against Leicester and is determined to overcome his setback against City.

He posted on Instagram: "Live and you learn and you go again!! No excuses!! #wayoffit #keepstriving."

Lingard's Class of 2011 teammate Paul Pogba also reacted to the defeat on the social media site.

Pogba posted: "The season is just starting, we don't lose, we learn. United we stand."

United face Feyenoord in their Europa League opener on Thursday before travelling to Watford for a midday kick-off on Sunday.

Mourinho felt individual performances affected United's approach against Pep Guardiola's side.

"I'm clearly disappointed with the the first-half," Mourinho stressed. "Disappointed with some really poor individual performances that affected the level of the team.

"It was not just about them [Mkhitaryan and Lingard]. Other players were also not playing really well and obviously, as well as my decision, I don't like to go in the direction of singling out players. Let's say our team didn't play well in the first-half and their responsibilities are my responsibilities."
