McCarran airport, the ninth busiest in the US with nearly 43 million passengers passing through last year, said the first report was received at 4.13pm local time. The fire was extinguished and all passengers evacuated by 4.18pm.

It took only two minutes for the fire service to get to the plane.

Captain Henkey, who has 42 years of flying experience, remained calm as people applauded when he emerged from the burning plane.

His Ex wife was in the front row to congratulate him saying that he had done a ‘bloody good job,’ claming that he would always be a hero in her eyes.

He is safe and happy… He did a bloody good job
One runway was close as paramedics attended to the injured passengers while flights continued through the other runways.

The fire might have been caused by a bird strike or engine blockage but the plane would still have flied with one engine, according to aviation expert Julian Bray.

It can still fly with only one engine. It would have gone around, landed and everybody would have got off
Boeing 777 was built in 1998 and has a good safety record.
