Former First Lady, the late Lucy Kibaki died a jovial and cheerful woman despite the excruciating pain she was going through as a result of acute arthritis that was literally sacking the life out her. This was revealed by a source familiar with her struggles with ill-health, who declined to be mentioned out of respect for the former President Mwai Kibaki’s family.

According to the source, the presence of her beloved husband Mwai Kibaki at her bedside kept her heart warm and cheerful. “For two years, Lucy was in … seclusion with her family. She was in her senses all through and though she was grappling with pain, she remained cheerful surrounded by family, including her husband Mwai Kibaki,” said the source. This was confirmed by former Kajiado North MP, John Kean, who revealed that Lucy wanted Kibaki to be by her side when she dies. Kean, who was among those who seduced Lucy for Kibaki and even organized for them to get married, noted that the two were deeply in love ever since they met and that they wanted to die or live together. “I remember in 1960 when I was driving my Volkwagen to Mombasa with Kibaki to campaign for KANU, we almost drove into an elephant and Kibaki’s prayer was that we should not die and leave Lucy behind,” said Kean.
