Bungoma, KENYA: A drunk dairy cow has slept for four days after accidentally drinking 40 litres of busaa in Siaka village, Kanduyi constituency, Bungoma county.

The cow came across the brew while grazing in a sugarcane plantation on Saturday.

The owners of the cow fled yesterday when journalists flocked to the home, thinking they were police officers. A neighbour, Ayub Masika, said the brew was prepared for a cultural celebration, which was to be held on Saturday.

He said the owners of the cow had opted to prepare busaa in the sugarcane plantation to evade arrest by police, who have been cracking down on illicit liquor.

‘’Unfortunately, the cow came across the brew while grazing and drank it,’’ Masika said.

Residents said they were shocked to see the cow try to stand up, but fall back down and they thought it was sick.

Kanduyi subcounty veterinary officer Japheth Sifuna said the cow had high alcohol content in its body that made it restless and confused.

“We have given it some medication and hope it will get better,” he said.
