A 27-year-old-man in Mukono is planning to wed a 70-year-old woman next year.

The two, Steven Tikubuwana and Zaituni Nakanda, are already living together in Kyungu in Mukono municipality in a single-room house. The house belongs to Nakanda. Their plot is approximately an eighth of one acre.

“My elder brother gave me money with which I bought a piece of land and built this house where we are living now,” says Nakanda.

Tikubuwana told Sunday Vision that they met last year after he losing his job as a shamba boy.

“I lost my job and was homeless for about two months. She welcomed me into her home. At first, she seemed afraid, but later warmed up to me,” says Tikubuwana.

He adds that his relatives and friends may not be happy with their relationship, but he does not care.

He reveals that he has a son and a daughter aged four and eight, who are living with his parents in Kabale district.

He claims that unlike his former wife, Nakanda is faithful and caring.

However, he has not yet revealed the news to his parents; he plans to invite them to his new home.

Nakanda had been single since 1993 when she left her former husband. She says getting a husband is a miracle.

She too claims indifference about negative comments regarding their relationship. She is happy that the young man is never ashamed to introduce her as his wife.

However, Beatrice Nakanfu, a neighbour of the couple is infuriated. “As a mother, it annoys me that such an old woman can get involved in a relationship with someone young enough to be her grandson. What a shame!” she laments.

Similarly, Michael Ssempijja, the LC1 chairman of the area, says it is a shame. “Youth should work hard for their wealth as opposed to marrying much older mates for the sake of getting property,” Ssempijja said.

Nakanda claims to be pregnant, but doctors who examined her say at Mulago hospital it is not true. She has, however, refused to believe the doctors.

Nakanda, who is childless, hails from Kamuli district. She has never conceived or even had menstrual periods. All her siblings are dead. She has nephews and nieces living in Mukono who sometimes support her. Her youthful husband does casual jobs in Mukono municipality.
