– Former First Lady Lucy Kibaki was pronounced dead on Tuesday, April 26, after being flown to the United Kingdom for specialised treatment after being hospitalised for over a month at the Nairobi Hospital
– The death of Mama Lucy Kibaki plunged the country into mourning and a number of leaders and Kenyans have eulogised her with some recounting their moments with. The latest to do so is former Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara who was slapped by the late former First Lady at State House, Nairobi
– Imanyara has revealed that Lucy slapped him because he had helped institute legal action against her after she stormed Nation Centre and assaulted a photojournalist who was capturing her as she boiled over a story touching on her family
Former Imenti Central Member of Parliament and lawyer Gitobu Imanyara has opened up about his relationship with the late former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki a day after she passed on while receiving treatment at a hospital in London, United Kingdom.
In a social media post, Gitobu has delved into the circumstances that led to the infamous slapping the former First Lady handed him when he visited State House, Nairobi, as MP.
While eulogizing the late Lucy Kibaki, Imanyara said her demise brings to an end one of the colourful yet dramatic chapters of the story of Kenya’s State House.
“During Mwai Kibaki’s tenancy therein State House was one of the most watched government institutions with Mama Lucy claiming to have the final say on who should be invited to what she considered her matrimonial home,” Imanyara wrote.
He lauded the deceased as a fierce and unapologetic defender of her husband and did not shy away from going physical if it became necessary.
But what exactly prompted Mama Lucy to slap him when he visited State House?
The early incidences at the Nation Media Group had a major impact in the altercation. It can be remembered that Mama Lucy had early on stormed the Nation Centre along Kimathi Street at dawn and assaulted a photojournalist who was capturing her as she protested a story about her that had been published by the Nation newspaper.
The story was about how she stormed a party at her Muthaiga neighbourhood and demanded that the music be shut down and those in the party arrested.
It was her assault on photojournalist Clifford Otieno that saw the journalist institute legal action against her. And who was to represent him? Gitobu Imanyara.
Despite the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko dismissing the case, Mama Lucy was not impressed at all with Imanyara representing Otieno.
“When she raided NATION House to protest media coverage of her husband she didn’t hesitate to assault one Clifford Otieno a star photo and video journalist who subsequently instructed me to bring a private prosecution against her. Even though DPP Tobiko terminated the prosecution in a clear case of abuse of office Mama Lucy never forgave me for instituting proceedings against the First Lady,”Imanyara recounts.
It was when he visited State House that she landed on him with a slap before demanding he leaves the premises.
“My last visit to State House as a member of parliament for Central Imenti saw her physicality confront me to leave State House in an incidence that I regret for reasons I will write about in my memoires,” he adds.
But the former MP holds no grudge against the deceased. He has sent condolences to former President Mwai Kibaki’s family.
“May I take this opportunity to convey my condolences to President Kibaki and the other members of his family and may Mama Lucy find the peace that she so much deserves,” he concluded.
