UPDF officer shoots self-dead
GULU. Uganda People’s Defense Force’s (UPDF), officer who had just returned from serving a military mission in the war torn South Sudan, on Friday shot himself dead under unclear circumstance.
Private James Ochan attached to the fourth Division infantry barracks in Gulu reportedly shot himself in the head using an AK47 assault rifle on Friday evening shortly after picking a quarrel with his relatives inside the barracks.
The deceased was among the 3,000 UPDF officers deployed in Juba and other hot spots of the country in December 2013, after a war broke out between the rival factions of former vice president Dr Riek Machar led rebel group against President Salva Kiir’s government.
Daily Monitor learnt that Private Ochan was in the first Battalion 413359 brigade in South Sudan and was among the first batch of UPDF officers who left South Sudan mid this month.
He was awaiting redeployment to Mbale district.
Fourth Division infantry Spokesperson, Lt Ronald Ovon confirmed the incident to Daily Monitor in a telephone interview on Monday, adding that they are yet to set up a board of inquiry to investigate Ochan’s death.
“This is sad news for us especially for the relatives of the soldier who had just returned home smiling a week ago. We are further saddened to lose a trained soldier. If he had any problem, he should have approached his seniors for solutions,” said Lt Ovon.
Lt Ovon added that from their preliminary findings, the deceased seemed to have been involved in squabbles with his relatives at his home shortly after his return.
He was however quick to note the shooting was not related to war trauma.
The fallen soldier’s body has been handed over to the family members for burial after a post-mortem test carried out showed that the bullet blew off his brains.
When contacted, the UPDF army spokesperson, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, said UPDF in conjunction with British government instituted a directorate of mental health Department that will cater for the soldiers who need psychosocial support and rehabilitation before they are redeployed.
“As UPDF we are taking care of the mental health of our soldiers. We have now trained mental health attendants at the various army establishments in the country who will undertake to monitor the officers who just returned from the front line,” he said.
The last group of Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers withdrawing from South Sudan crossed into Uganda on Friday, leaving the country’s security in the hands of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the yet-to-be deployed United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force.
SPLA soldiers took control of UPDF bases in Nesitu, Juba airport, and Bor as they wait for 12,600 UN forces.
