Dead Nyeri wife who wanted to be buried with title deed turns home into demons’ playground. The grave diggers attempt to pull out the coffin. The ropes broke five times during the exercise.

Esther Wambui’s spirits are said to be tormenting her family two years after her death in what the family fears could be a curse likely to spread down generations. The restless soul of Wambui has reportedly left Kariki village, Othaya in Nyeri County aflame with allegations that she has dispatched demons to haunt her family because she was not buried according to her wishes. Esther Wambui was secretly buried by her husband of 40 years on a parcel of land at the centre of a protracted court battle with a local pastor who claims he bought the land from the only son of the deceased, Charles Macharia. The land in dispute was where the family claims Wambui wanted to be buried with the land’s title deed atop her coffin. But the family moved to court and filed a suit to reclaim the land the pastor acquired, arguing Macharia had been suffering from a mental condition since 1972 and could not have independently sold the land. But days after her burial, Pastor James Kihara of the Chinga Deliverance Church (who had the title deed and transfer documents), obtained an exhumation order from the Nyeri High Court and witnessed the exhumation of the body and its subsequent transportation from the contentious 0.75 acres land – to the mortuary under tight security in November, 2013. But Pastor Kihara who spoke shortly after the exhumation said that as a man of God, he was unperturbed by the said curses and insisted that he legitimately bought the land. Wambui’s remains have been lying at a Nyeri morgue ever since, and Peter Njagi, the husband and this daughters say her restless soul has turned the homestead into a playing field for demons. “Sometimes at night, I hear huge birds scratching the roof near my bedroom. On one occasion, I even saw a cat with very huge eyes in the house. It disappeared after I poured cold water on it,” said Mary Wangari. But now the family says it won’t conduct a second burial for their departed mum, fearing that the evil spirits allegedly visiting the family may increase their routine and wrath. “Even if she stays in the mortuary till after my death, I won’t in the least be bothered because I know I did what she wanted. Burying her elsewhere will anger her even more,” says the husband. It is alleged that the case took its current twist after Wambui’s close relative sold the land to a church in Othaya – a discovery that ignited a protracted court battle. “The last time I saw her in the mortuary, I thought for a minute that she was still alive. I know these things because I have seen them in Tanzania. But I will not touch her body unless I am allowed to bury her on the spot where she requested to be laid to rest,” says Njagi.
